Description
Thirty-eight street lamps are located on the Esplanade in Brighton, stretching from the western borough boundary to the Palace Pier. These cast-iron lamp standards were installed in 1893, as indicated by a tablet fixed to the standard near the West Pier. The brackets and lamps were originally made of copper and brass in the 1930s, but these were replaced with angled lights in 1980, and then with fibreglass replicas of the 1930s design in 1982.
The lamp posts have an octagonal base that narrows towards the top, with sloping sides adorned with foliage ornament. Above the base is a knop featuring nailhead ornament, followed by a baluster form decorated with acanthus leaves. The main column has its lower quarter decorated with diagonal foliage sprays, while the upper part is ribbed and extends to two short maintenance arms. Above these arms is a spreading basket capital. Two curved brackets support the structure, with the space between them filled with openwork ornament and topped with the borough's arms. From these brackets hang two octagonal spiked lanterns. The first 26 lamps are arranged alternately on the north and south sides of the Esplanade, while the remaining lamps are primarily on the north side, except for the thirty-second lamp, which is set back.
