Description

A terrace of houses dating from around 1850 to 1860, with alterations made in 1886/7 and subsequently. The terrace, numbered 59 to 127 (odd), includes numbers 88, 89, and 90 Western Road. The construction is stucco over brick, with some facades having a roughcast finish. The roofs are hidden behind parapets. Built on a hillside, the terrace is mixed in height, with three and four storeys above a basement. The frontages typically feature a two-window bow. The windows are sash windows with varying patterns of glazing bars; some are casements with leading, and a few blind boxes remain. A moulded parapet runs along the roofline, along with a moulded cornice. The first floor windows have cast-iron balustrades. Pilaster doorcases frame the entrances, and the doors vary in style. Numbers 59 to 61 have rounded corners to the window openings, set within moulded surrounds, with fluted pilaster quoins topped by composite capitals, and a dentil cornice to the second and third floors. A fluted string separates the first and second storeys. Similar detailing is found on the south return of number 59, which incorporates numbers 88, 89, and 90 Western Road. Numbers 88 and 89 have single-fronted shops with original glazing, panelled plinths, and doorway surrounds that echo those of the upper windows. Cast-iron railings and walls extend back from the road frontage, along with some sections of tessellated pavements.
