Description

Numbers 1-22 and attached railings are a terrace of houses built around 1845 in stucco, with slate roofs except for Nos 1-4, which have a parapet concealing the roof. No. 1 Victoria Road is included in the listing. The houses are two storeys high with a basement, and Nos 5-22 have dormers in a mansard roof, while No. 1 Victoria Road has a dormer in a hipped roof. The houses generally have a two-window range, with No. 1 Victoria Road having a one-window range. The ground floor is decorated with banded rustication, and features a flat-arched entrance with pilasters and entablature, incorporating an overlight, and a full-height segmental bay with tripartite windows. A window sits above the entrance, and the bay is crowned with an entablature, cornice, and blocking course; stacks are located on the party walls.

Several modifications are noted amongst the properties. At No. 1, the bay windows have been re-glazed, a window has been inserted above the entrance, and a dormer has been added. Nos 3-4 have canted bays, and No. 3 has a window opened above the entrance. No. 5 has a canted bay and a cast-iron window guard to the ground floor. No. 7 retains original design sashes to the ground and first floors, with a tiled roof; No. 8 has a canted bay and a window above the entrance. No. 10 has a window above the entrance, tripartite windows with original design sashes to the first floor only, and a tiled roof. No. 11 has a window above the entrance and original design sashes to the bay. No. 13 has original design sashes in the bay, while No. 14 includes original design sashes to the first floor of the bay. No. 15 has a canted bay. No. 16 has original design sashes to the middle windows only in the bay. No. 18 retains original sashes. No. 19 features a cast-iron window guard to the ground floor. Nos 20-22 have original design sashes in the bay and cast-iron window guards to the ground floor. No. 1 Victoria Road incorporates a 20th-century bracketed canopy over the entrance on Montpelier Street, with a return section in Victoria Road featuring a flat-arched entrance with an architrave.

The interior of the houses has not been inspected. Cast-iron railings with spearhead finials are present to the entrance steps and area.
