Description
A mews was built between 1840 and 1860 to serve the eastern side of Lewes Crescent and Sussex Square in Brighton. The mews is constructed of stucco scored to resemble ashlar, with slate hipped roofs. This listing covers the buildings along the north and east sides of the courtyard, forming a roughly L-shaped plan: a three-window range on the north side, a four-window range to the east, and a return front facing south with a one-window single-story building to the east. A garage to the extreme east and the buildings at the western mouth of the courtyard are excluded.
On the north range, there is one high, flat-arched carriageway with double plank doors and wrought-iron strap hinges of original design. Adjacent to this are two flat-arched entrances with semicircular overpanels. The eastern elevation has four round-arched openings, two with 20th-century entrances; the pair closest to the corner retain original glazing bars. The return wing features two round windows with sloping jambs. All first-floor windows are flat-arched with projecting sills, and there are bracketed eaves. The rear elevation to Eastern Place includes seven identical ground-floor windows, with a seven-window range above; most of the first-floor windows, excluding those in the third and fifth bays, retain original 8/8 sash windows. Chimneys are located on the centre of the hip ridge and along the outside walls. The interior was not inspected.
The mews is included for its group value with the major Lewes and Sussex Crescents.
