Description

Number 9 is a terraced house built between 1827 and 1829, designed by Amon Henry Wilds. It is constructed of stucco with a concealed roof behind a parapet. The house is four storeys high over a basement and has a four-window facade. The ground floor features an entrance on the right and three windows, each set back beneath a pointed arch with a heightened ogee profile decorated with cusping, imitating the Royal Pavilion. The fanlight and glazing bars are seemingly original and echo the pointed arches. Individual cast-iron balconies are present before each window. The elevation is flanked by a pair of octagonal pilasters with roll-moulded capitals at the attic cornice level, and a second pair of octagonal pilasters flank the two inner windows, terminating above the third floor sill band in capitals of Oriental design. Upper floor windows are flat-arched and framed by simple square architraves; those in the inner bays are set back twice within the architrave. Moulded strings run across the elevation, acting as a storey band between the ground and first floors, as a sill band below the outer second-floor windows, as a cornice over the inner second-floor windows, as a sill band to the third-floor windows, and as a vertical band on either side of the inner windows on the first and second floors. A final moulded string serves as the cornice and blocking course. The interior has not been inspected. Cast-iron railings with ornate balusters are present to the steps.
