TQ3602NE THE GREEN, Rottingdean 577-1/60/1073 (East side) Walls and lych gate to churchyard of the Church of St Margaret

GV II

Walls and lych gate. C18 and 1897. Cobbles or flint with brick dressings. Wall approx 10 metres south of the lych gate; on the south side of the churchyard approx 220 metres with various returns; on the east side, approx 25 metres south of Tudor Close; and a further 20 metres north of Tudor Close; on the north side approx 50 metres. The walls are interrupted at various points by openings, all with brick dressings. The wall immediately to the north of the lych gate was built at the same time as the lych gate in 1897. Lych gate is timber-framed on flint base with red brick dressings. Half-hipped tiled roof with wooden bargeboards. Frame is close-studded and has arched braces at the ends. An inscription to the church side reads "Blessed are they that hear the word of God and keep it" and on the Green side "Enter into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise". Wooden gates on Green side. Interior paved with narrow bricks and with a bench on either side. Lantern of 1992.
