Description
The walls and lych gate to the churchyard of the Church of St Margaret date from the 18th century and 1897. The walls are constructed of cobbles or flint with brick dressings and extend approximately 220 metres along the south side of the churchyard, with various returns. There is a wall about 10 metres south of the lych gate, approximately 25 metres south of Tudor Close, and a further 20 metres north of Tudor Close, as well as about 50 metres on the north side. Openings with brick dressings interrupt the walls at various points. The wall immediately north of the lych gate was built at the same time as the lych gate in 1897.
The lych gate features a timber frame on a flint base with red brick dressings. It has a half-hipped tiled roof with wooden bargeboards. The frame is close-studded and includes arched braces at the ends. An inscription on the church side reads "Blessed are they that hear the word of God and keep it," while the Green side has the inscription "Enter into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise." There are wooden gates on the Green side, and the interior is paved with narrow bricks, featuring a bench on either side. A lantern added in 1992 is also present.
