Description

The lychgate at the entrance to the West Churchyard extension in Beddington dates from around 1868 and is attributed to the designer Joseph Clarke. It features two entrances framed by open timber structures topped with tall hipped tile roofs, with the northern entrance being wider, taller, and having a significantly higher roof. Both roofs are adorned with metal cresting. The eastern sides of the entrances are clad in flint walling and are highlighted by pointed moulded stone arches with corbels, with the northern arch being the taller of the two.

Attached to the northern part of the north entrance is a lean-to outshut constructed of flint walls and a tile roof. This outshut includes a doorway on the west side, a quatrefoil topped by a gable on the north wall, and a small round-headed window on the east wall. Above the north entrance, there is an inscription that reads: "All that are in the graves shall hear/The voice of God and shall come forth." The lychgate is completed with wooden gates featuring panels of turned uprights set within a wooden frame.

This structure is part of a group that includes the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, other lychgates, churchyard walls, the wall along Church Lane, the Orangery Wall, Beddington Place, a gate and screen, the Pigeon House, Nos 1 to 3 Beddington Park Cottages, premises occupied by the Hockey Club and an adjoining structure, East Lodge, the wall southwest of Beddington Park Cottages, and the garden walls to the north of the Orangery and Beddington Place.
