Description
The front garden walls to several properties on Onslow Avenue in Cheam date from the late 17th century and are part of the former Hare Warren Wall, which is associated with one of three known hare warrens on the North Downs. These walls were likely built after hunting rights were relinquished from royal ownership. Originally, the structure included a brick-walled enclosure with small trap doors for egress holes along the west side, and there was a warrener's house at the northeast corner, which was demolished in 1930.
The walls are primarily made of red bricks laid in Flemish bond, featuring plinths, a course of flints near the base, battered coping, and pilasters at intervals. Although some sections have been altered to create entrances for 20th-century houses, the walls on the east, west, and south sides remain largely intact. There are egress holes in the walls before Nos 5, 9, and Driftwood, with two before No 15. The walls are interrupted by various entrances: one each to Nos 3, 5, and 7; two each to Nos 9, 11, and 13; one each to Nos 15 and 17; two to Green Gap; one to Driftwood; and two to Wychwood. South of Wychwood, the wall continues as the south garden wall, extending eastward into the garden of No 18 Wilbury Avenue.
