Description
This is an early 18th-century house, with alterations and a refronting dating from approximately 1850. The house is built of brick, with a stucco front added around 1830, and roughcast to the rear. It has a brick-coped gambrel roof, covered with Welsh slates at the front and concrete tiles at the rear, along with a brick stack on the right end and a rear stack to the outshut. The original building comprised two main rooms with a rear outshut. The house is two storeys high, plus an attic, and originally had a single window range. A 20th-century shop front now occupies the front. A sash window from around 1830, originally tripartite with glazing bars (now removed from the centre), remains on the first floor. A flat-roofed dormer with 20th-century casements is situated in the roof. The facade is flanked by raised pilasters and features bracketed eaves. The side walls have large semi-circular arched recesses, containing two early 18th-century twelve-pane sashes to the left and one to the right, all with original thick glazing bars. Inside, the house has an early 18th-century open-well staircase with winders, stick balusters, and a wreathed mahogany handrail. The first floor includes an early 19th-century marble fireplace and horizontally-sliding window shutters. Early 19th-century panelled doors are also present throughout the house.
