Description

The Parish Church of St Mary, located on the south side of High Street in Mortlake, was founded in 1348, although the current structure dates from 1543, with the tower from that time. The church was enlarged in 1725 and again in 1845. The chancel was added in 1885, and the nave and south aisle were completed in 1906 by Sir A Blomfield. An adjoining Vestry House, built around 1660-70, may include some earlier elements.

The western tower features four stages and a later cupola, with chequer work of stone and flint on the third storey. The tower is constructed of Tudor brick with stone dressings above, and there is a polygonal stair turret at the north-east corner. The north aisle of the church is made of brick, while the remainder of the building is rubblestone from the late 19th and 20th centuries. The church is designed in the Perpendicular style, with a clerestory and a low-pitched lead roof. The chancel is lower than the nave.

The adjoining Vestry House is a two-storey red brick building with a slate hipped roof and two windows wide. The upper windows are square-headed, featuring two lights with timber mullions and a transom. To the left, there is a similar window below, set in a chamfered stone recess with a segmental relieving arch above, while the right-hand lower window retains two chamfered mullions.
