Description

The Gallery at No 142, Doughty House, is a gallery built around 1880 for Sir Francis Cook and extended in 1915 by Brewer Smith and Brewer for Sir Frederick Cook. The structure is made of stock brick with a Portland stone extension to the west and features top lighting. It has eleven bays and is designed in a giant Ionic order with a balustrade. The lower order includes door and window openings situated between Doric pilasters. The upper bays are glazed with small paned fixed lights, while the lower bays contain a mix of glazed openings and doorways with heavy iron gates. A monumental flight of balustraded stone steps leads to the entrance at the upper level on the north side.

Inside, the gallery is arranged over two floors. The original design features a long gallery with an octagon and an organ room beyond, highlighted by a mosaic floor in the octagon room and a skeleton coffered gilded ceiling. An iron balustraded staircase with a mahogany rail leads to the lower level, which is similarly subdivided and includes a collection of columns and a mosaic floor. The west upper gallery retains remnants of a coffered ceiling and a lower loggia, with openings that showcase an antiquarian collection of columns and flanking niches. The heavy iron gates feature central bosses.
