Description

This is a house located at 40 Church Street in Twickenham, dating from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. It is constructed of brick and features a hipped slate roof. The building has three storeys above a basement and includes a single-storey wing at the rear. The front of the house is one window-bay wide, with the ground floor stuccoed. There is a doorcase that may be from the early 19th century, and a 20th-century window beneath a shallow canopy. A canted bay window, likely from the early 19th century, is present at the first-floor level, while a wooden window is found on the second floor. The building has a brick dentil cornice and modern boxed eaves.

The west side of the building is mostly blank, featuring only a narrow sash window for the stairwell. The rear elevation is stuccoed and includes late 18th-century or early 19th-century sash windows. Inside, the ground floor front room retains panelling, likely from the second half of the 18th century, on the east and south walls, with some on the west wall; however, the chimney piece on the east wall is missing. There is an original panelled doorcase leading to the staircase hall, which has a simple staircase and a panelled cupboard across its width, both probably dating from the early 19th century. The ground floor rear room features a panelled dado on the west and part of the north walls. The first-floor front room has an 18th-century chimney piece and a panelled dado likely from the early 19th century. There is also an 18th-century chimney piece in the first-floor back room and in each of the two second-floor rooms.
