Description
Rutland Lodge is a late 17th century house that underwent significant rebuilding after a fire in 1967. The front elevation is made of brown brick with red dressings and features seven bays, with the central three bays slightly projecting forward. The windows are set in shallow vertical recesses, and the arches above them are made of gauged brick with a stepped extrados. The building has two main storeys and an attic storey, which is located above a richly carved modillion cornice. This cornice was likely originally an eaves cornice, with the attic storey being an alteration from around 1720. To the left of the main structure is a plain, two-storey brick wing. The centrally placed front door is framed by a large doorcase with fluted Roman Doric pilasters on a rusticated surround, featuring an interesting bracket lamp. The pilasters support a triglyph frieze topped by a segmental pediment. Access to the house is through a fine wrought-iron gate flanked by brick piers.
