Description
The ice house at No. 143A is a Grade II listed structure dating from the 18th century, with repairs made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of red-brown and stock brick and is covered by an earth mound. The ice house features a barrel-vaulted tunnel that is approximately eight feet long, leading to a hemispherical chamber about nine feet in diameter, both filled to ground level and having a concrete floor. The interior walls are rendered. The entrance and the outer side of the tunnel have been damaged on the left side due to tree roots. On the right side, a 20th-century brick wall has been added, bonded into the original structure, serving as a screen or buttress. A 20th-century vertically boarded door is set back under the entrance to the tunnel.
This ice house was formerly part of the grounds of Petersham House. No. 143A, previously known as Magnolia House, served as the stables for the main house and is balanced by No. 141 to the east.
