Description
The Barracks, now used as dwellings, offices, and stores, was built for William III in 1689 to replace earlier foot barracks constructed under Charles II. The west end served as horse-guards and the east end as foot-guards, originally separate buildings connected by a 3-bay sutlery built in 1700. The structure is made of brown brick with red dressings and has pantile roofs. The foot-guards section features 27 windows, is two storeys high, and has upper windows that are square-headed and lower windows that are segmental. It includes timber mullion and transom casements, a brick band between the storeys, and moulded timber eaves. The horse-guards section has 17 bays, is also two storeys but slightly taller, and uses similar materials, windows, and eaves, although some windows are partly blind for stabling. Both parts have tall chimneys on the back wall.
