Description
The Church of St Mary is a parish church that dates from the 16th century onwards, with significant elements from the 18th and 19th centuries. The chancel was built in 1753-1754, while the tower was completed in 1764. The church features red Tudor brick on the south aisle, with dark vitrified headers creating a draper effect, and stone dressings on the 19th-century Tudor Gothic nave, north aisle, and tower, which are made of brown brick. The chancel is constructed of yellow brick. The 18th-century west tower is battlemented and consists of three stages, adorned with round arches. The north aisle has three round-arched windows, with the center window projecting forward and topped with a pediment. A three-light perpendicular window is located at the east end of the church. Inside, there are monuments dedicated to notable figures such as Peg Woffington, Henry Hitcroft, and John Walters, the founder of "The Times."
