Description

West Side House is a substantial house, now converted into flats, dating from around 1760 or possibly earlier. The house is constructed of brown brick with red brick dressings, and has a low-pitched slate roof hidden behind a parapet. The original central section is five bays wide, with early 19th-century extensions adding four bays to the left and three bays to the right. A central, pedimented entrance features a console pediment, although the door itself is 20th century. Giant pilaster strips define the bays of the original part of the house. The windows are square-headed, with gauged brickheads, and contain sash windows with recessed plate glass. Tall chimneys, also with red dressings, are linked in pairs. The interior retains an 18th-century staircase with a ramped, pilastered dado, scrolled ironwork balustrade, and fielded panelling. Various rooms feature panelling, some fielded, along with cornices and other decorative features.
