Description
This is a substantial detached house, now divided into three residences, built in 1894. It was designed by E J May and is constructed of brick with stone dressings, some tile hanging, and steeply pitched roofs. The house is two storeys tall, with an additional roof storey, and is built in a Domestic Revival style. The main entrance is located on the left return, sheltered by a shell-hooded porch supported by flanking Tuscan columns. The facade consists of an irregular arrangement of three main bays, each individually gabled; the central bay is recessed and features a projecting balcony with balustrades of turned timber. A central projecting bay window extends to both the ground and first floors. The ground floor windows in the centre and to the left have stone mullions and transoms; the upper-floor windows are timber mullioned and transomed. Most windows are square-headed, except for the segmental-headed windows on the ground floor to the right and the five-light gable windows in the outer bays, which have a central arched light. Tall chimneys are topped with moulded details. The treatment of the other facades is similar. The interior retains numerous original features, including a barrel-vaulted entrance hall with richly moulded panelling, cornices, and a fireplace; a dining room with panelling, a marble and timber fireplace with a recessed panelled niche above, and rich cornices; an open well staircase with turned balusters; and further decorative cornices.
