Description
Hillcroft College, including the former stable block, was built in 1877 by Sir Rowland Plumbe. It is a large house with outbuildings, constructed from red brick, featuring some tile-hanging and plastered gables with incised decoration. The windows are timber mullioned and transomed sash windows, with some bayed designs. The main facade boasts an elaborate porch made of turned wood, with a painted arched doorway. The roofs are tiled, with hips and gables, and there is an octagonal spirelet at the southwest corner. A short return to the south has a pair of two-storey bay windows, and there are many tall, red brick, ribbed chimney stacks. Inside, original panelling, fireplaces, and stained glass are still present. The former stable block on South Bank Road shares similar architectural details. There is a modern extension located between the stable block and the main building, as well as behind the main building, but these are not of special interest.
