Description
No. 1 South Terrace is a villa built between 1838 and 1840, featuring unpainted, lined stucco facing and a low-pitched slated roof with bracketed eaves. The building is designed in an Italianate style and consists of two storeys with an irregular plan. It has pedimented wings facing northeast, northwest, southwest, and southeast. The entrance is square-headed and located in a projecting porch to the north, positioned at the angle between the projecting wings.
On the northwest wing, there is a canted bay window with a heavy cornice at ground floor level. The windows are square-headed, with 3-light sashes that have arched heads and plate glass on the northeast face and the upper storeys of the northwest and southeast faces. There is a stucco architrave around a casement window on the ground floor of the southeast face, and the southwest face features 12-paned sashed windows. The villa also has corniced chimneys and stucco quoins. This property was built as part of the initial development of Surbiton, which began following the arrival of the railway in 1838.
