Description
Hook War Memorial is situated in the churchyard of the Church of St Paul in Hook.
The memorial features an upper section designed as a pediment, which displays a Latin cross in front of a crossed sword and anchor motif within the tympanum. This area also includes wreaths and leaves. Below the pediment, a frieze is inscribed with the years 1914 and 1918, along with the words "TO OUR GLORIOUS DEAD." Beneath this is a rectangular stone tablet that lists the names of the fallen in two columns. Below the names, there are two inscriptions: "WHO STANDS IF FREEDOM FALL?" and "WHO DIES IF ENGLAND LIVE?". The tablet is flanked by Corinthian columns on either side and rests on a two-stage, single-stepped base. The front face of the upper stage of the base carries the inscription: "THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED BY THE / PARISHIONERS OF HOOK AND SOUTHBOROUGH / IN MEMORY OF THE MEN / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR US." The entire structure is set on a single step made of a contrasting material.
