Description
23 Market Place is an early 17th century building that underwent alterations in the 18th century and was significantly rebuilt after a fire in 1973. It features a timber frame and a tiled pitched roof. Originally, it was a two-storey structure with a jettied upper floor that included three separate units. In the 18th century, the roof was raised to create attic space and was rebuilt with four gabled dormers, although the original roof trusses were preserved. The walls are rendered, and the ground floor has a shop front that resembles the 19th-century design that existed before the fire. Much of the timber frame and facade survived the fire, along with some 17th-century timber panelling on the first floor. However, the load-bearing function of the timber frame has since been replaced by a new reinforced concrete frame. This building is also known as No 1 Church Street.
