Description
13 and 15 Church Street is a 17th-century building that has been altered over time. Originally, it consisted of two separate cottages, each two storeys high and one bay wide. In the 19th century, a third storey was added. The ground floors have been combined into a single shop, while the upper floors remain separate. The ground floor features a modern shop front. The upper floors are rendered and have a decorative band at the second floor level.
Despite the 19th-century alterations that raised the roofs, some original 17th-century timber elements are still present. Both cottages originally had double roofs, and tie beams can be seen at the front and rear of both buildings. Some of the original principal rafters remain, including a raking queen strut in the northern truss of the back roof of No 15 and a butt purlin in the back slope of the front roof of No 13. Additionally, No 15 retains an original brick chimney stack above ground floor level, featuring grouped rectangular flues. Just below the tie beam of the northern roof truss at the rear of No 15, there is a three-light timber-framed window with diamond mullions.
