Description

The Memorial Gates outside the Church of All Saints were erected in 1924 as a war memorial. They are made of wrought and cast iron, set into the stone slabs of the churchyard.

The gates, supporting piers, and screen are symmetrically arranged, facing south to form an entrance to the churchyard, with railings on either side extending east and west. The ensemble features ornate scrolled panels and spearhead dogbars at the base. Above the gates, there is a segmental arched overthrow topped with scrolled finials and the badge of the East Surrey Regiment, flanked by gilded, moulded leaves. The gates consist of four panels divided by a mid-rail adorned with scroll work, while the screen is decorated with rose emblems.

The gates are supported by two main piers that have scrolled panels and finials topped with a gilded crown and cross. Two smaller piers mark the edge of the southern face and support the east and west flanking railings. Attached to the front face of the screen are two oval painted plaques with dedications: to the left, "THESE GATES WERE LARGELY THE GIFT OF THE 4th BATTALION EAST SURREY REGIMENT ON ITS DISBANDMENT," and to the right, "THESE GATES COMPLETE THE EAST SURREY WAR REGIMENT MEMORIAL 1914-1918 THE OTHER PART OF WHICH IS INSIDE THE CHURCH."
