Description
The Foscolo Memorial is a chest tomb located approximately 25 meters southwest of the west tower of the Church of St Nicholas. It was created in 1861, likely designed by the sculptor Baron Morochetti. The tomb is made of marble with a hipped top, set on a granite plinth, and originally featured metalwork details, although the railings and bronze wreath have since been removed. The memorial commemorates Ugo Foscolo, an important Italian patriot and a leading early 19th-century Romantic poet, second only to Leopardi. In 1871, Foscolo's remains were disinterred by Italian authorities and transferred to the Church of Santa Goce in Florence.
