Description

Brentford Health Centre is a health facility that also housed a juvenile employment bureau at the rear. It was built between 1937 and 1938 by L A Cooper and K P Goble, who were the borough engineer and architectural assistant for Brentford and Chiswick. The building is constructed of brick with concrete floors and flat roofs, some of which project while others are concealed behind high parapets. It features an irregular plan with one and two storeys surrounding a double-height waiting hall at the back of the site. The south elevation facing Brentford High Street is two storeys tall and includes a tower that contains a caretaker's flat.

The building has irregular elevations with projecting curves on the west side and extended concrete canopies over the entrances on the north, south, and east sides. All windows are metal casements with a strongly horizontal pattern in the glazing bars. The tall metal window and clerestorey in the tower are significant features of the design. There are also some round metal portal windows, particularly at the southern entrance and in the tower. The exterior walls on the west and south sides, the latter featuring iron railings that echo the horizontal motif of the windows, along with curved walls and steps, are important elements that enhance the composition leading up to the tower and waiting room. The gates also reflect the horizontal motif with a grid design and expressive curves. There are small single-storey additions within the courtyard behind the eastern elevation, but these are not of special interest.
