Description
The De Loutherbourg Memorial, located approximately 26 metres west of the Church of St Nicholas on Church Street, is a chest tomb dating from around 1812, designed by Sir John Soane. It is made of Portland stone and features fluted corner pilasters and recessed panels at each end. The top of the tomb is shaped with alternating segmental and triangular pediments, each adorned with a laurel wreath in the tympanum and flanked by antefixae. Surviving wrought-iron railings by Soane are located to the north of the tomb, complete with urns and anthemiae on the corner panels. The memorial commemorates the painter Philip James De Loutherbourg, who died in 1812, and his wife Lucy, who died in 1828.
