Description

This is an 18th-century wall and gate associated with Hogarth’s House. The wall and gate suffered damage during enemy action, but were subsequently repaired by the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Buildings (SPAB). The wall and gate are constructed of brown brick with red dressings. The gate itself has an elongated hexagonal plan and extends over three storeys plus an attic, originally featuring five windows. The central bay is constructed of wood and contains three arched windows within architraves, each topped with a keystone, and a cornice supported by six consoles. A brick band runs above the first floor. The roof is covered in old red tiles, with two dormers. The house was the home of William Hogarth, the artist, from 1749 until the night before his death in 1764, and is now a Hogarth museum.
