Description
The Old Workhouse is a building dated 1789, as indicated by a stone plaque above the door, although it appears somewhat older. It has two storeys and an attic, featuring five windows. The building has a fairly high-pitched tiled roof with three gabled dormers. The walls are made of red brick and include a brick dentil cornice. The windows have all been modernized, with some being 19th-century casements and others modern iron casements. The ground floor windows are set under gauged brick segmental arches. A modern central gabled porch has been added. At the rear, there are two wings with hipped gabled ends, which have been rebuilt in places, creating a U-shape. Inside, there are visible chamfered ceiling beams and brick fireplaces that appear to be from the 18th century. The building is noted for its historic interest as it was originally constructed as the parish workhouse. A modern west extension has been added using similar materials.
