Description
The Church of St John is a parish church located on Royal Lane in Hillingdon. It features a chancel arch from the 13th century, which is the only remaining part of an earlier chancel. The nave and aisles were constructed in the 14th century, while the west tower was rebuilt in 1629. The church underwent refurbishment and the addition of transepts and a chancel by Sir George Gilbert Scott between 1847 and 1848. A northeast vestry was added in 1964 by H Norman Haines.
This cruciform church includes aisles, transepts, and a west tower. It is built of coursed flint with freestone dressings and has tiled roofs. The tower, rebuilt in 1629, consists of four stages, features battlements, and has an octagonal wooden cupola with a bell and weathervane. The windows are mainly traceried.
Inside, the church has a 13th-century chancel arch with stiffleaf capitals on short stalks. The nave and aisles consist of three bays from the 14th century, supported by octagonal piers with capitals and arch mouldings. The north aisle roof dates from the 15th century, with main timbers supported by corbels featuring stone busts.
The church houses several monuments, including a large brass for Lord Strange from 1509, a monument with figures for Sir Edward Carr from 1657, and a splendid reclining figure for Henry Pagett, Earl of Uxbridge, from 1743. There is also a 19th-century marble pulpit.
