Description
The Conifir Cafe, formerly known as A W Smith and Sons, is likely an early 16th century building that features a Tudor front from the 18th and 19th centuries. It has two storeys and three windows. The left bays have slightly projecting gables adorned with Victorian bargeboards. The high-pitched roof has been renewed with machine tiles. The front is pebbledashed and painted, but reveals an 18th century brick dentil cornice in the right bay. The first floor has casement windows under hoodmoulds. The ground floor has modern shops. Inside, there are exposed timbers, and part of the roof displays side purlins with wind braces, although not all are visible. The building is part of a group that includes The Red Lion Public House and The Red Lion Hotel, both located at 369 Royal Lane.
