Description
Bretons is a late 17th-century building that was rebuilt around 1740, while still retaining some earlier features. It stands three storeys tall and is constructed of red brick. The front has five flush framed sash windows with cambered heads, raised bands, a cornice, a parapet, and a triple hipped slate roof with end stacks. A central full-height square projection features an open Doric columned porch with an entablature adorned with shaped modillions and a painted wood modillion cornice, topped by a pediment. The doorway is notable for its heavy wood rustications, a six fielded panelled door, and a heavy wood barred radiating fanlight.
The rear elevation also has three storeys and five windows, with sash windows that have cambered heads, although the ground and first-floor windows have been replaced by modern wooden casements. There is a central six fielded panelled door with a cornice hood and a central round-headed staircase window. The building has single-storey wings with tiled roofs projecting to the right and left.
Inside, there is a black and white paved entrance hall featuring a fine late 17th-century round-headed archway of wood with a cartouche. The staircase, also from the late 17th century, has a robust design with a heavy handrail, continuous string, twisted balusters with carved cups, and square newels. The room to the left has a plain marble fireplace surround and a modillion ceiling cornice, while the room to the right features ceiling panelling from around 1740 and a modern fireplace surround.
