Description
The Hall of St Leonard's Children's Home, built in 1887, is constructed of red brick with tiled roofs. It is particularly notable for the sculptural group above the main entrance, which is made of artificial stone and dates from the early 19th century. This sculpture features a woman flanked by a boy and a girl on a plinth adorned with swags. Originally, it was located in a niche over the entrance to a parochial school that was rebuilt in either 1801 or 1806 on Kingsland Road in Shoreditch. The sculpture was moved to its current location in 1887 and is inscribed with 'Van Spangen and Powell', 'Mile End', referring to a terracotta manufactory that was established to compete with Coade and Sealy.
