Description

The Woodlands, located at 90 Mycenae Road, is a Grade II* listed building originally constructed in 1772 as the Convent of Little Sisters of the Assumption and now serves as the Kidbrooke House Community Centre. This two-storey structure features dormers and five windows, designed in a Renaissance style with stone. It has a green slate roof and a frieze adorned with festoons beneath a moulded cornice band, topped with a blocking course. The windows are recessed within rebated reveals.

The entrance porch is supported by plain Ionic columns, paired on each side, and includes an entablature and blocking course. A ground floor bay window is adjacent to the entrance. On the north side, there is a one-storey, two-window extension, while the south side features a one-storey, three-window pedimented projection with four half-columns capped with "Tower of the Hinds" designs. There are segmental niches on the ground floor on either side, with shallow sinkings above on the first floor, and a round-headed window aligned on the first floor.

The rear elevation includes twin shallow bow windows on the ground floor, with a round-headed niche situated between them and a sculptured round panel above. The house was built for J J Angerstein, whose collection of paintings became the foundation of the National Gallery. It was also briefly occupied by Caroline, Princess of Wales.
