Description
The Royal Arsenal West Riverside Guardroom is a guardhouse built in 1814, possibly designed by James or Lewis Wyatt. It is constructed of yellow and red stock brick, featuring a limestone ashlar cornice and parapet, with a central brick stack and an 8-sided hipped slate roof. The building has an octagonal single-room plan and is a single storey with an 8-bay range. Each side includes rubbed brick segmental-arched recesses; the south entrance bay has a 6-panel door, while the other sides have segmental-arched 6/6-pane sash windows. The interior lacks decorative features. This guardroom was originally one of a pair that flanked the river entrance to the Arsenal, which served as the main entrance. The steps to the guardroom were removed in 1931.
