Description
Royal Arsenal Building 18 is an office building constructed between 1855 and 1856 by Lieutenant Colonel R S Beatson, Royal Engineers. It was extended to the west before 1888 and later to the east. The building is made of brick with stone dressings, featuring ridge and lateral stacks and a hipped slate roof. It has two storeys and a symmetrical front with a six-seven-eight window range, fitted with 2/2-pane sash windows.
The façade includes an ashlar plinth, a ground-floor cill band, a plat band, and a frieze. The central section, built in 1854, has a three-bay pedimented centre that is set forward, flanked by paired pilasters and double doors leading to an ashlar porch. The outer sections maintain the same style, with a four-window range to the west that includes a lateral stack and a lower porch at the end, which is set back and features a round-arched doorway, fanlight, and double-panelled doors. The eastern section has a two-four window range.
Inside, there is a central stair hall that features a rear dog-leg stair with ornate cast-iron balusters and a heavy wreathed rail. The interior also includes six-panel doors, moulded cornicing, and a large round-arched stair sash window at the rear. The building is noted for being a significant surviving element prominently located within the group of historic buildings at Woolwich Arsenal.
