Description

The walls surrounding the garden of "The Gate House," which is the residence of the Commandant of the Institute of Army Education, are likely from the late 17th century or early 18th century. These brick walls, featuring sloped coping and gabled gate piers, are located in front of the Gate House, specifically in the Tilt Yard Approach. Along the west side of the garden, there are similar brick walls. The east side features an original 16th-century red brick wall, complete with sloped coping, which includes small niches with pointed heads every 3 or 4 yards and a diaper pattern of blue headers in the central part. The original wall on the south side has been much repaired in the 19th century, and its coping has been lost. Additionally, running east from the southeast corner of the Gate House is a section of red brick wall that appears to be from the 18th century and is said to be part of an earlier Gate House.
