Description

The Former Enfield Electrical Works is a building from 1906, designed by an unknown architect. It features red brick construction with extensive buff terra cotta dressings and a slate roof. The front facade, which faces the street, has six bays and includes two doors that were blocked at the time of inspection. These doors are situated beneath over-lights shaped like Diocletian windows, with the right-hand door still displaying its arched terra cotta hood with a keystone.

The ground floor windows are arranged in pairs and have gauged red brick arches with terra cotta keystones, while the upper windows consist of six-pane sashes, although the lower parts are boarded up. The first floor windows feature mullions and transoms, with six-pane windows in all but the second and fifth bays, which have four-pane windows. A terra cotta sill band and radiating voussoirs are located above the windows, along with a segmental-hooded central cartouche inscribed with "1906 ENFIELD ELECTRICITY WORKS." The eaves cornice and quoins are also made of terra cotta.

The side elevations of the front block have a central stack flanked by circular windows at the attic level, with terra cotta plat bands and banding on the stacks. The rear block, likely the former turbine room, has a more utilitarian appearance, faced in yellow stock brick with four arched openings and a circular window at the south end. The north end is mostly hidden by corrugated iron sheeting. The building is listed for its architectural quality and significance as a local utilities structure.
