Description

St Andrew's Works, located at 197-243 Pollokshaws Road in Glasgow, was built between 1899 and 1900 by Myles for the Glasgow Corporation Electricity Department. This tall, single-storey building features a pressed brick façade with 15 large recessed arched bays, of which 8 are blocked. The original windows display a 42-pane pattern, and there are terracotta plaques situated between the windows. The structure is topped with a stone cornice and a brick parapet over the end and central bays, adorned with urns and a central pediment.

The northern part of the roof remains original, covered with slates, skylights, and five ventilators, while the southern part has been modernized, except for the end, which retains a slate covering with a louvred ridge ventilator. The interior is steel framed.

Adjacent to the main building is a two-storey, seven-bay office constructed of ashlar with incised detailing. It features a wide central entrance that has been modernized, flanked by symmetrical door and two-window groupings, with one door now converted into a window. A consoled cornice with a block pediment is present at the center above the ground floor, and the windows are sash and case. The office also has a curvilinear pediment and an urn finial.

The south wing is a two-storey, 18-bay side elevation made of red brick with blue bands. It includes arched windows, most of which contain 18 panes. The stone front features a large arched door with foliated carving in the spandrels. Additionally, there is a Jacobean style window with two mullions and a transom, and the gable is topped with an urn finial. At the rear, there is a lower boiler house.
