Description
No. 36 The Avenue is a Grade II listed building, constructed in 1879 by architect R. N. Shaw. This red brick house features tile hanging under a tiled roof and is designed with two and three storeys. The front elevation has a prominent gable, while the side facing Blenheim Road includes a pediment with an enriched plaster tympanum. The building showcases varied fenestration, including several wood casement bay windows, with the ground floor windows being of the Ipswich type. To the left of the large gable, there is a gabled dormer, and brick end stacks are present. This house is an unaltered example of Shaw's first design for a detached residence and is illustrated on page 206 of 'R Norman Shaw' by Andrew Saint. The original studio wing facing Blenheim Road is also included in the listing. The building was originally occupied by the artist J. Nash.
