Description
The entrance block of Queen's Road Hospital, dated 1886, is a notable surviving part of the Croydon Union Workhouse, recognized for its tall tower. The building is constructed of stock brick and features a channelled lower stage with a wide round-headed doorway, above which is a stone plaque displaying the date and a defaced inscription. The middle stage includes angle pilasters and recessed centre panels, with the front elevation showcasing a tall round-headed window and an oculus above it; the other sides have an oculus only. The top stage is adorned with a cast iron balcony and has two round-headed windows on each side set within a square recessed panel. The roof is pyramidal and slated, with wide eaves supported by brackets. To the right of the tower, three bays of the original ground floor remain, while to the left, two bays survive up to a height of three storeys. Flanking the front door are two contemporary fluted cast iron lamp standards.
