Description

The war memorial stands within the churchyard of St John the Evangelist Church, Upper Norwood, and was unveiled on 2nd November 1919. It consists of a wooden cross with a gable, on which stands a statue depicting a crucified Christ, all resting on a concrete block base. A brass plaque is fixed to this base; at the top is a crucifix, below which is the inscription ‘S. JOHN THE EVANGELIST. / ROLL OF HONOUR / 1914 - 1918’. The names of those who fell are listed in two columns below this inscription. At the base of the plaque is the text ‘GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS. S JOHN X V. VERSE XIII’. The memorial is situated within a small, circular rockery.
