Description

The Church of St John, located on Sylvan Road in Upper Norwood, was built between 1878 and 1887 by architect J Pearson in the Early English style. It features a striking tall west front with grouped lancet windows, flanked by square turrets topped with pyramidal stone roofs. The church includes a lean-to round-arch narthex, a 4-bay nave with double aisles, transepts, a straight-ended chancel, and a south chapel. The interior is constructed of stock brick and has a brick and stone vaulted roof, along with a tall clerestory that includes a wall-passage and a west gallery. Notable interior features include a stone rood screen and reredos adorned with numerous statues. The south transept was originally designed to support a tower that was never constructed. The church underwent restoration after sustaining bomb damage, carried out by Carol and Partners from 1946 to 1951.
