Description
The monument to Vice-Admiral Robert Fitzroy is located in All Saints' Churchyard and dates from around 1865. It features a cast-iron railed enclosure with spear rails and dog rails set on a stone plinth. The headstone has a curved top and includes a roundel with a cross held by an anchor. The footstone, replaced in 1985, acknowledges Fitzroy as the first head of the Meteorological Office, which he established in 1854. Fitzroy, who lived from 1805 to 1865, was the captain of the 'Beagle' during Charles Darwin's first voyage from 1831 to 1836 and made significant contributions to meteorology. He also served as the Governor of New Zealand from 1843 to 1845. His wife, Maria Isabella, who died in 1889, and their daughter, Laura Maria Elizabeth Fitzroy, who died in 1943, are also buried at this site.
