Description
1, 2 and 3 Kelsey Square are houses, likely former cottages for firemen from the fire station opposite, built around 1873. They are constructed of red brick with decorative black brick detailing. The buildings have a tiled roof with four brick chimneystacks and are two storeys tall with a basement, featuring six windows in total. There is a brick modillion cornice, and the first floor has three paired casements, with the second one altered in the early 20th century, and timber-framed gables with bargeboards. The casements include horns, while the ground floor has three triple casements with cambered head linings, and similar windows are found in the basement. The first floor showcases black brick patterns in diaper and quadrefoil designs. The houses feature elaborate wooden and tiled gabled weather hoods with carved bargeboards and deep brackets. Each house has a six-panelled door, with the top four panels being glazed. There are also intricate cast iron area railings with a dograil and scrolled principals. A large chimney breast is located on the north side, and the rear elevation includes two gables with polychrome diaper decoration and one hipped gable.
