Description
The Mottingham War Memorial is a war memorial dedicated on 26th March 1920, designed by architect George Hubbard and built by John Daymond & Sons.
Constructed from Portland stone, the memorial features bronze plaques and is designed as a hexagonal Roman Doric temple, standing about 4 meters tall. It encloses a central altar-like structure and has a moulded entablature supported by six Roman Doric columns, all resting on a moulded stone plinth with two steps. Inside the temple, the central hexagonal altar-like structure displays six bronze plaques, topped by a stone Roman cross. One of the plaques bears the inscription:
THIS MONUMENT/ IS ERECTED/ IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF/ MOTTINGHAM/ WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR/ GOD, KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE WORLD WARS/ 1914-1918/ 1939-1945
The remaining five sides list the names, regiments, and ranks of the 44 local men who lost their lives in the First World War. Additionally, a bronze plaque on the temple plinth commemorates the 24 local men who died in the Second World War. Below this, another bronze plaque is inscribed:
ALSO REMEMBERED/ WITH GRATEFUL APPRECIATION/ THOSE WHO, SINCE THE SECOND WORLD WAR,/ HAVE GIVEN THEIR LIVES IN CONFLICTS/ AND PEACE-KEEPING MISSIONS/ THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.
