Description
Geffery's Homes (Almshouses) were established by Sir Robert Geffery, who was the Lord Mayor of London, for the domestic servants of the Ironmongers Guild. The current almshouses were built in 1912, designed by architect George Hubbard, and the original statue of Sir Robert Geffery along with his funeral monument were relocated to this site.
This Neo-Georgian building is two storeys high and forms three sides of a square. It is constructed of brick with a tile roof. The central section projects forward and features a pediment adorned with festoons and the motto "God our strength." This portion has an open curved pediment, triglyphs, two Doric columns, and a rectangular fanlight. The building has rusticated quoins, flat arches with keystones, and stringcourses. On either side of the central projection, there is a single storey with a round window, and flanking this are two wings, each with three pediments and three doors. The central door of each wing is topped with a curved pediment supported by two Tuscan pillars and four pilasters. Each side also features a doorcase with a flat hood supported by brackets and a rectangular fanlight.
On the rear elevation, the statue of Sir Robert Geffery and a clock are incorporated into the masonry. The windows are fitted with jalousies. The ground floor includes a five-arched colonnade, with a balcony featuring balustrades above.
