Description
The original building of the former Bexley National Schools, dated 1834, was constructed from an endowment by the Reverend Thomas Smoult in 1703. This two-storey structure is made of yellow stock brick with stuccoed dressings in a Neo-Jacobean style. It features a slate roof with a stuccoed parapet, two shaped gables with date stones, and four clustered chimney-stacks. The building has a moulded stucco cornice and stucco quoins. There are four casement windows, which include mullions and transoms on the ground floor, topped with shaped lintels. A date plaque inscribed 'Bexley National Schools' is located in the center of the first floor, likely covering an earlier window. The entrance is marked by a brick porch with a segmental arch and a recessed door. At the rear, there are plain schoolrooms that are one storey high, with seven windows on the south side.
