Description

These artisans' cottages, numbered 116 to 124 Hampstead Way, along with numbers 2 and 4 Temple Fortune Hill, were built between 1907 and 1908 as part of the Hampstead Garden Suburb development. They are the work of Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin and form a significant group within the wider Hampstead Way, Temple Fortune Hill, and Asmuns Hill area, marking the original artisans' quarter. The exterior is painted pebbledash with a red brick plinth in Flemish bond. The roofs are tiled with swept eaves, exposed rafters, tile gable kneelers, and hipped roofs where the ranges meet at an angle. The buildings are two storeys high and feature a nine-window range, with a five-window range to numbers 116 to 122, intended to close the view of Hampstead Way from Asmuns Hill, and a four-window range to numbers 2 and 4 Temple Fortune Hill. A canted corner plan defines one section. The windows are original casement designs, with flat arched openings and weatherings to numbers 2 and 4 Temple Fortune Hill. Entrances in the outer ranges are set within recessed porches with a small light in the outer corner. A flanking party wall features deep, canted bays with flat metal roofs, topped by identical windows set under half dormers with short eaves returns. A ridge stack is positioned on this party wall. The central, recessed range is broad and relatively plain, with a ground-floor band of tile lintels and angled ridge stacks to the right of the fourth-window range. A ridge stack sits between the first and second window ranges, and a recess provides access to storage areas within the fifth-window range. Numbers 116 to 122 represent a variation on the design of numbers 2 and 4 Temple Fortune Hill; window ranges one through four and six through nine mirror those of numbers 2 and 4, linked by a central range containing a cross passage leading to the rear garden and topped by a small half-dormer with a facing gable. Ridge stacks stand above the gable facing dormers, with the central stack’s long axis parallel to the ridge. The rear elevation includes two-span gable facing dormers over catslide outshuts, visible only partially.
