Description
La Délivrance is a war statue designed by Émile Guillaume between 1914 and 1918. It was donated to Finchley Urban District Council by Viscount Rothermere and erected in 1927. The statue is made of bronze and stands on a pink polished granite pedestal.
The figure depicts a female nude with her arms stretched upward, holding a sword in her right hand. She stands on tiptoes atop a hemisphere, which is mounted on a faceted drum pedestal and a square base. The hilt of the sword and the front of the base are inscribed with the title of the piece. An information panel explains that the statue symbolizes the emotion felt among the Allied nations when the armies of Britain and France defeated the invading German forces at the Battle of the Marne in September 1914.
